Dave & Buster’s in Friendswood hiring

Positions include servers, bartenders, bussers, front desk staff, game technicians, line cooks and dishwashers.

The Dave & Buster’s location (704 Baybrook Mall Dr., Friendswood, Texas) is slated to open on Nov. 16 in conjunction with the grand opening of the Baybrook Mall multi-million dollar expansion project that began in early 2014 to revitalize and energize the mall.

Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar in Friendswood, Baytown Thursday for Good For Texas Tour

GHegar2014cropTexas Comptroller Glenn Hegar will visit Friendswood and Baytown Thursday, Sept. 17, to discuss the local economy and developments from the recent legislative session as part of his Good For Texas Tour.

Business and community leaders and residents are welcome to attend the town hall-style meetings. The Friendswood event is from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Friendswood Chamber of Commerce, 1100 S. Friendswood Drive. The Baytown event is from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Baytown Chamber of Commerce, 2407 Market St.

Identity theft, IRS tax fraud cases reported in Friendswood

The Friendswood Police Department has received 28 separate reports of identity theft involving someone fraudulently filing tax refunds using personal identifying information with the IRS for the 2014 tax year. Twelve of those reports were in the past week.

Scammers continue to use Social Security numbers and other information collected in data breaches to steal a person’s identity and file a fraudulent tax return. A higher-than usual number of identity theft reports indicate that the first time a taxpayer becomes aware that their data has been compromised is after they file their return, are waiting for a refund, and receive a notice from the IRS that somebody has already filed their tax return.

My advice for next tax season is to file tax returns as early as possible during the tax season, especially if a taxpayer anticipates a refund.

Gas Leak Causes Evacuation at Clear Brook High School

FRIENDSWOOD, TX (KTRK) — Students at Clear Brook High School in Friendswood were evacuated from the school building due to a gas leak.
According to a school district spokesperson, a construction crew working at the building hit a line, causing the leak.
No students or staff were injured. The school was evacuated as a precaution. Students were allowed back into the building, where they are being held in the gym for early dismissal.

Best-Selling Author to Speak at Friendswood Library

Colonel Robert H. Sholly, USA (Ret.) author of the award-winning book, “Young Soldiers Amazing Warriors: Inside One of the Most Highly Decorated Battalions of Vietnam” will speak about his first tour in Vietnam at the Friendswood library located at 416 South Friendswood Dr. on Thursday (Feb. 26) from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

“Young Soldiers Amazing Warriors” is based on journals the author kept during his first combat tour in Vietnam and eye-witness accounts of survivors. It has reached the No. 1 Best Seller position on Amazon Kindle and has won 20 national awards, including a Grand Prize, since its publication in February 2014.

The story recounts day-to-day operations in the Central Highlands of Vietnam in 1966-67. Humor is mixed with the difficulties of mountainous terrain, wild animals and vegetation. Included in the account are stories about unexpected animals, ferocious firefights and awe-inspiring actions of young men just out of high school, who are heroes in the making.

Sholly gives accounts from his men’s perspective which are exciting, intriguing and memorable. Numerous individual citations were awarded to soldiers for their bravery and valor.

In addition to other awards and decorations in an unheard of 60-day period, four men were awarded the Medal of Honor, the nation’s highest honor, while five other soldiers were awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, the second highest award.

Colonel Sholly will be available to sign books after his presentation.

Friendswood Crawfish Festival May 24

The 2nd Annual Friendswood Crawfish Festival is set to take place May 24th, 2014 at 505 S. Friendswood Drive.

The event is sponsored by the Friendswood Lions Club. Scheduled for Memorial Day weekend, the festival offers a family-friendly atmosphere and a small-town feel. The music lineup will feature some of Houston’s most talented local musicians and performers. A healthy attendance is expected from all over the Greater Houston area.

“Crawfish season is here and we are ready to bring those Louisiana Mud Bugs right to the City of Friendswood,” says Justin Tolliver, owner of Justin’s Seafood Restaurant. There is no shortage to the entertainment the festival plans to offer. Guests can participate in a crawfish eating contest, relax and enjoy the live music, and partake in some shopping with local artists and craft vendors’ wares. Radio station 100.3 The Bull will be in attendance with local DJs and prize giveaways.

Thursday, April 17th at 6:20pm — Movie Night with Summer Stock starring Judy Garland, Gene Kelly, and Eddie Bracken. Directed by Charles Walters in 1950. This film is not rated and runs 108 minutes.

Wednesday, April 23rd at 7pm — “Soldiers, scholars and poets of WWI” The Rev. Dr. Crawford will give a presentation on the lives and works of the extraordinary men who served in WWI and how they struggled with the devastation of that war. A number of these young men wrote extraordinary poems, letters and prose as they wrestled with death, dying and destruction. Mark Crawford earned his Doctor of Ministry Degree from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary.

Monday, May 5th from 6 - 8pm — Art Exhibit Reception. Come meet local artist Regina Lee Parkinson and view her artwork. Refreshments provided. Artwork will be on display through the end of June. Artist Regina Lee Parkinson creates paintings and mixed media work rich in color, place and story. Her piece entitled “Daring Beauty” received first place in the mixed media category at the Galveston Art League Spring Juried Show in May 2012. Her work is in private collections around the world. Rape Aggression Defense (RAD) Training for Women April 24-27

R.A.D. is a program of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques for women. The R.A.D. System is a comprehensive, fifteen (15) hour women-only course that begins with awareness, prevention, risk reduction and risk avoidance, while progressing on to the basics of hands-on defense training. R.A.D. is not a Martial Arts Program. Class is open to all women ages 12 and up. The course is a great/mother daughter program.
