Pearland Demonstrates How Going OUT is IN with Parks & Recreation This July

OutIsInPEARLAND, TX – June 30, 14 – If you find yourself feeling as though you don’t get to spend enough time outside, you’re not alone. Nearly 3 in 10 U.S. adults do not spend time outside on a daily basis and of those who do, almost half spend less than 30 minutes in the fresh air according to a survey released by the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA). In light of this research, Pearland Parks & Recreation and the NRPA are partnering to challenge everyone to get out, visit their community parks and engage in recreational activities during national Park and Recreation Month.

This year’s theme, “OUT is IN,” encourages individuals, families, friends and coworkers to do something outside every day that they would normally do inside. From picnicking in the park instead of sitting inside at a table, or holding a meeting outside, there are small ways you can make going OUT part of your daily routine. The parks and facilities run by Pearland Parks & Recreation offer ample opportunities to go OUTside, get INspired, change your OUTlook and get INvolved.

“It’s the year-round mission of our department to provide quality facilities, programs and services to improve Pearlanders’ quality of life. With the support of the NRPA, we take the month of July to bring that mission to the forefront, and remind ourselves and our neighbors that parks and recreational activities are a cornerstone of a higher quality of life,” said Parks & Recreation Director Michelle Graham.

The City of Pearland’s celebrates Park and Recreation Month through a social media campaign inviting park patrons to take photos of themselves while engaged in outdoor activities. Photos can be uploaded to the Pearland Parks & Recreation Facebook page, with winners determined by the number of likes that each photo receives. Winners will receive prizes, while submitted photos will be printed and displayed at the Recreation Center & Natatorium throughout the promotional period.

In addition to getting involved in Park and Recreation Month locally, people are encouraged to take the OUT is IN 31-day social media challenge on Twitter and Instagram by posting photos of themselves doing typical inside activities outside with the hashtag #JulyOUTisIN.
