Pearland council OKs lower tax rate

Pearland City Council recently voted 5-1 to approve a property tax rate that is lower than this year’s rate but not low enough to satisfy some residents worried about rising home values.

The tax rate for next year – 68.12 cents per $100 of home valuation – represents a cut of 2 cents from the current rate of 70.53 cents.

Projections that many residents would pay more in taxes and the city’s approval of higher water and sewer rates have sparked debate on the council and in the community about the crunch on taxpayers.
