While a letter making the rounds on social media warns that “liberal gay rights Democrats” are seeking positions on Pearland’s City Council and school board, some of the targeted candidates are enjoying the support of the state Democratic Party even though the positions they seek are nonpartisan.
The implications of the letter, written and distributed by a Pearland real estate agent, are explored in my latest “Greater Houston” column.
The letter doesn’t name the Democrats that its author says want to “take over City Council and the school board.” It urges votes for seven city and school board candidates, mostly incumbents, including longtime Mayor Tom Reid. Republicans have long dominated politics in Pearland and surrounding Brazoria County.
