The Community Appearance Index (CAI) is a tool designed by Keep America Beautiful (KAB) to visually assess the overall appearance of communities through indicators such as litter, illegal signs, graffiti, abandoned/junk vehicles and outside storage.  A team of community, business and government representatives conduct the visual analysis using a scoring system ranging from 1-4, with “1” being the best to “4” being the worst.

The Litter Index for Pearland rated a 1.464 in 2015 and has consistently rated below 2 since 2011.  KPB will host lunch and orientation at the Stella Roberts Recycling Center March 5 at 12 PM.  Afterwards we will pile into the stylish community service van to conduct the survey.  Please consider joining us on March 5th to analyze Pearland’s overall appearance.  If you think of anyone else that might be interested, please forward them the information and email us at info@mykpb.org.

KPB Arbor Day Celebration Nov. 14

12185254_10153221613284849_6630371944334940207_oTrees are important oxygen producers, help provide energy saving shade and the presence of trees positively impacts our psychological well-being. Each year Keep Pearland Beautiful (KPB) celebrates Arbor Day along with the rest of Texas. This year’s Arbor Day celebration is on November 14, 2015 from 8:00AM to noon Zychlinski Park. At this event KPB will be giving away 2 tree seedlings to Pearland residents (until supplies run out).

Keep Pearland Beautiful will have native pecan, eastern redbud, Mexican white oak, and two different varieties of vitex (Arbor Day Tree Guide 2015). Each Pearland household will receive 2 tree seedlings (can be two of the same or two different seedlings). These seedlings should be planted in a gallon or larger container for its first few years. This will allow the seedlings to be nurtured and grow in a safe environment.

Make sure to save the date and come out to this year’s  Arbor Day Celebration. Pearland will benefit from more trees in multiple ways. First, people are attracted to a community with beautiful landscaping that includes trees for shade.  Second, in city urban spaces and your own neighborhood a thriving tree canopy is important to keeping temperatures down in the summer.  Planting trees around your home increase the energy efficiency of your air conditioner in the summer months. And finally, everyone benefits psychologically from having green spaces with trees. For more information about trees and Keep Pearland Beautiful visit www.mykpb.org.

On August 27, 2015 Keep Pearland Beautiful (KPB) held its first Gardening Expo to celebrate National Planting Day Celebration. The forty participants at this event learned about gardening and yard care by visiting with the vendors and participating in hands-on activities.

Pearland Lions Club sponsored the event by donating the use of their building. Brazoria County Beekeepers Association, HEB, Keep Pearland Beautiful, Native Plant Society of Houston, Sweet Organics, Sprouts, and Pearland Community Garden, and Pearland Old Townsite Farmer’s Market had educational booths at the event.  Children and adults alike were encouraged to make edible compost, seed paper, wildflower seed bombs and plant some popcorn in a cup.

KPB Board President Cassie Mitchel said, “I am pleased with this year’s Gardening Expo!  Even with both the Pearland High School football game and the Pearland Little League baseball game happening at the same time, folks came out to learn more about native plants and fall gardening.”

Three years ago, Keep America Beautiful started National Planting Day to celebrate the value and power of native species in restoring ecological balance to the environment while creating greener, more beautiful communities. With a national focus on September 12, 2015 and activities happening throughout the Fall, national nonprofit Keep America Beautiful, its affiliates and its partners are mobilizing Americans to plant native species of trees, flowers, and plants and make America more “Bee-utiful.”

Native species are losing ground to suburbanization, fragmented habitats, ornamental plants and invasive species. Yet we know that natives are critical to attracting specialized pollinators and insects, which in turn provide food for birds and ultimately many more animals up the food chain. Natives also provide habitat for wildlife. Natives are hardy, low maintenance and require less water than other ornamentals.

A reliable reference website about native plants is American Beauties Native Plants and for Texas the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower is a great resource https://www.wildflower.org/.

The next National Planting Day event for Keep Pearland Beautiful is a native planting event in our Yardwise Demonstration Garden on Tuesday October 14, 2015 at 9:00AM.  Call 281-652-1779 or visit www.mykpb.org to learn more about the planting event and the Yardwise Garden.

Keep Pearland Beautiful Frequent Recycler Program – Get Rewarded for Your Recycling Efforts!

Jose Mendieta presents gift certificates to the Keep Pearland Beautiful frequent recycler of the quarter Julie Fowler.

The KPB frequent recycler of this quarter is Julie Fowler! Julie has been recycling at the city of Pearland recycling facilities since the volunteer-run recycling center opened on Old Alvin Rd in the 1980s.  She is a faithful recycler, who had numerous frequent recycler cards in the drawing bucket.

Keep Pearland Beautiful and the City of Pearland’s Stella Roberts Recycling Center are partners in the Frequent Recycler Reward Program for faithful customers of the Recycling Center. The program is open to anyone that frequently brings their paper, cardboard, aluminum cans, metal cans, glass and plastic containers to the center to be recycled.

The premise of the program is very simple; reward Pearland citizens who recycle consistently and frequently. Customers receive a punch on their frequent recycler card each visit to the recycle center per day. When the card has been punched 6 times the customer turns the card into the recycling center staff. Every quarter one card will be drawn and be pronounced the winner of a gift certificate to Emma’s Mex Grill in Pearland.

Keep Pearland Beautiful is grateful to Emma’s Mex Grill for sponsoring this rewards program!
