We have a group of teachers, principals, and administrators visiting Grand Prairie ISD from the Lower Kuskokwim School District in Bethel, Alaska.
Our Bilingual Department began a partnership with this district some twelve years ago after they met at a national bilingual/dual language conference. Grand Prairie ISD is a flagship district for the Gomez & Gomez model for dual language which has been a proven effective academic and linguistic model for 20 years. LKSD was needing assistance as they worked to save their native Alaskan language which is still a work in progress today.
Over the years, staff from GPISD has traveled to Alaska just as the LKSD team has traveled here to observe and learn best practices.
The Alaskan team will be at GPISD’s Ellen Ochoa STEM Academy located at 2030 Proctor Street, Grand Prairie, 75051 on Wednesday, February 16, from 1:15 pm to 2:45 pm.
GPISD and LKSD staff will be available today in a classroom setting to discuss this process and the need to preserve native languages.
