The Pearland, TX based nonprofit, KidsRStrong2 (KRS2), not only supports children with life-threatening illnesses in the areas special programs and research for cures, but the organization also raises funds to allow for the allocation of scholarships to survivors interested in attending college.
“We are thankful to have the opportunity to support children in various ways during their battle with a life-threatening illness, and even after, as they transition into adulthood. The KidsRStrong2 scholarship program is just one more way that we are able to give back to the community through our organization,” said Tomika Gamble, president and founder of KidsRStrong2.
The KRS2 scholarship program is named in honor of a young girl named Mikayla, who in December 2015 lost her battle with a rare form of brain cancer, Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG). Mikayla, who was only 7 years old, had a love for learning, which is why it was fitting to name the program “Mikayla’s Scholars.”
“It was important for us to honor this sweet little girl who fought a good battle. Her strength and courage was absolutely amazing, and this is just one way that we will carry on her legacy,” Gamble said.
High School seniors interested in the applying to be a Mikayla’s Scholar must meet the following requirements: 1) have battled a life-threatening illness between the ages of 0-18; 2) be a graduating high school student with a GPA of 2.5 or better; 3) pursuing post-secondary educational opportunities at a four-year undergraduate college or university, a two-year community college, or a technical school
The deadline for submission of applications is June15, 2016. Late submissions will not be considered. Scholarships will be awarded in the amounts of $250, up to $1,000, depending on Board approval. Not all requests will be granted.
