Pear-Scape, a Public Art Sculpture Trail Project Envisioned

Call for Artist and Sponsorship Opportunities Announced

PearScapePears return to Pearland in the form of a public art sculpture trail project.  “Pear-Scape,” upon completion, will feature artistic fiberglass pears sized at 4’ tall painted by local artists positioned throughout the landscape of Pearland.

Pears along the Pear-Scape Art Sculpture Trail will be clustered within City parks and highly visible locations determined by the committee.  Early adopters to the sponsor levels will have an opportunity to choose a location and select an artistic design.

Envisioned by the Pearland Convention & Visitors Bureau (PCVB), funding for the initial twenty fiberglass cast pears is secured directly from the City’s Hotel Motel Occupancy Tax.  Collaboration with the local community in the form of sponsorship opportunities will offset the installation, artists’ stipends and related costs for completion.

“Our goal is to promote tourism and cultural arts within Pearland,” says Kim Sinistore, executive director, Pearland Convention & Visitors Bureau.  “We’ve created a committee of organizations comprised of public, not for profit and private businesses who support the mission to promote cultural tourism and community pride, ultimately bringing more visitors to Pearland.”

The PCVB teamed up with the Pearland Arts League and Pearland Alliance for Arts & Culture to conduct a Call for Artists to submit Pear designs for this project.

“It has been a pleasure representing Pearland Arts League on the 2016 Pear-Scape project committee. The Pearland Convention & Visitors Bureau staff led by Director, Kim Sinistore has always supported the arts in Pearland and soon the public will be able to enjoy the pear sculpture trail because of their efforts. Thanks to the PCVB and to the City of Pearland for showcasing the arts in Pearland,” Margo Green, exhibit chair, Pearland Arts League.

A variety of trees will also be planted by Keep Pearland Beautiful to accompany the Pear sculptures and enhance the overall landscape.  The combination of art and nature enhances Pearland’s beauty.

“We’re very proud to be associated with the Pear-Scape project and see it as a great opportunity to work with the local community to beautify Pearland and elevate nature and art,” according to Andrew Miller, executive director, Keep Pearland Beautiful.

Pear-Scape embodies a new tourism and cultural arts element in Pearland and offers community partners and sponsors an opportunity to participate in a few ways.  For more information, go to visitpearland.com/pearscape or call 713-436-5595.

BAKFISH Brewing Co Set to Open in Pearland

Pearland will soon be home to its first microbrewery with the anticipated January opening of BAKFISH Brewing Company located at 1231 Broadway Street. Two years ago, a casual conversation over beers between co-owners Brian Allen and Kris Szecsy about brewpub law changes emerged as a full-fledged effort to open their new business.

bakfish ownersLeaving their full time careers – a chemist in the oil and gas industry for Kris and business development in aviation for Brian, the BAKFISH name derived simply from their initials “B” and “K” with “fish” added as an homage to Kris’ background in marine biology plus the emphasis of being located on the Gulf Coast.

Brian, a native Pearlander, conducted a bit of research only to find the Houston area south of Loop 610 is underserved for brewpubs and soon after their Pearland location was born.

With over 8,000 square feet, BAKFISH Brewing Company will offer 5 core beers including a blonde, wit, brown porter, single IPA and double IPA plus seasonals. A 20-gallon pilot system will allow Head Brewer Kris an opportunity to test new products.

While Kris focuses on perfecting brews and testing new products, Brian manages the front of the house including the 3,200+ square feet of space available fbakfish beer kegor private events, 2,000 square foot tap room plus 1,200+ square feet in the actual brewery. With a seating capacity of 200, the duo plans to offer a variety of events to draw visitors including food trucks, game night, partnerships with biking and fitness enthusiasts and more.  BAKFISH is pet-friendly and kid-friendly.

The duo says right now they have verbal commitments from various local dining and drinking establishments to carry their product.

“We’re very excited to be part of the Pearland community and look forward to rolling out a few events to celebrate including two soft openings before our official ribbon cutting ceremony,” says Brian Allen co-owner of BAKFISH Brewing Company.

Peña’s Donut Heaven & Grill Expands with Second Location

penas-300x250Pearland’s donut guru Ray Peña announces plans to expand on the success of his widely-known Peña’s Donut Heaven & Grill to include a second location. Set to open summer 2016 at 10555 Pearland Parkway, the new location will feature some of the more popular items Peña is known for along with a few surprises.

With a larger footprint sized at over 2,700 square feet, the new location places Peña closer to his initial roots where his first restaurant opened in 1996 near the Sagemont community. Guests will find top sellers including a la carte breakfast items including donuts, the cronut, kolaches, and tacos paired with a few new signature dishes.

Still in development, Peña is perfecting recipes for new dishes along the lines of shrimp & grits and chicken & waffles.   A line of coffees by Katz Coffee will be featured as well. Lunch service will include specialty hamburgers and milkshakes.

According to Peña, “the new location will become a premiere breakfast destination and continue to build on our philosophy of delivering local flavor…honoring our Mom and Pop approach to the business.”

Peña’s son Ryan will be at the helm of the new restaurant working alongside his father Ray to hone his skills. Peña is currently collaborating with a notable architect to design plans for the new place.

IMG_2693For now, guests can indulge in the Christmas themed donuts which have been flying off the shelf since their release at the current Pearland location at 11601 Shadow Creek Pkwy, Ste 103 and of course many of the dishes that have put Peña’s Donut Heaven and Grill on the map.

Steel Magnolias Runs at Pearl Theater Oct 30 – Nov 15

stm-web-large-300x266The funniest show ever that will make you cry! Set in Truvy’s beauty salon in a small town in Louisiana. All the ladies who are “anybody” come to have their hair done while sharing the latest gossip and joys of friendship. The play is alternately hilarious and touching as it moves from the excitement of Shelby’s wedding to sadness as friends mourn her loss. The sudden realization of their mortality deeply affects the women, but also draws on the underlying strength—and love—which give the play, and its characters, the special quality to make them truly touching, funny and marvelously amiable company in good times and bad. These women are true steel magnolias: Southern Belles who are flowery on the outside, but strong as steel on the inside.

Steel Magnolias is directed by Cheryl D. Loudd who says, “Robert Harling’s work takes the audience through a wide range of emotions right along with the characters–from laughter to tears and everything in between. At a time when our lives are so fast-paced, Steel Magnolias is a good reminder of the power of friendship, and that the support of our loved ones can see us through just about any type of challenge.”

Robert Harling was inspired to write his first play after his sister Susan died of complications from diabetes.Steel Magnolias premiered off-Broadway at the WPA Theater in 1987, then quickly transferred to the Lucille Lortel Theater and became an instant sensation, running for three years and spawning a hit movie.
