Come take a walk on the City’s new Nature Trail

trailThe John Hargrove Environmental Complex trail located at 5800 Magnolia Road is now open. The grant-funded project includes a 1.7-mile recreational nature trail, sidewalk connections, trailhead signage and nine additional parking spaces at the Stella Roberts Recycling Center.

Project construction began in December 2015 with trail subgrade preparation and drainage designed to ensure the trail is stable and sustainable for many years.

Old Town Site “Quiet Zone” in effect

Old Town Site may be quieter than you remember as Quiet Zones are now in effect. The Quiet Zone, established by the Federal Railroad Administration, states that locomotive horns are not required within highway-rail grade crossings equipped with Supplemental Safety Measures or Alternative Safety Measures or crossings that have a Quiet Zone Risk Index at or below the Nationwide Significant Risk Threshold. Safe Exchange Zone initiative aims to keep residents safe 

xchangeThe City of Pearland is now offering a secure location for Pearland residents to help ensure and enhance their safety and to minimize the opportunity for an encounter to go wrong for internet-based purchases from websites such as Craigslist and eBay.

This initiative attempts to address safety and awareness concerns. Visit the Police Department webpage to read more.

Delores Fenwick Nature Center design moves forward

fenwickDesign will soon be underway for the Delores Fenwick Nature Center, an educational facility coming to the John Hargrove Environmental Center. 

The complex, located at 5800 Magnolia, houses the Stella Roberts Recycling Center, John Hargrove Environmental Center and the newly completed nature trail system. Read more on the the facility.

Do your part to help reduce pollutants

The City’s Stormwater Management Plan deals with ways to improve its surface water quality through the use of various Best Management Practices. 

Residents can help to reduce chemical, biological and physical pollutants from the ground and storm sewer system by employing the practices used by the City.

Concerts in the Park Kicks Off May 6

Pearland Concerts in the Park rock Southdown Park every Friday night from 7 to 9 p.m. during the months of May and June. Visitors enjoy live music with a variety of genres featured each week.

The free family event is held at Southdown Park, 2150 Countryplace Parkway, conveniently located off Texas Highway 288. Food vendors will be on-site selling delicious menu items for kids of all ages. Young kids will find plenty to do with the Splash pad and playground.

Visitors can bring blankets, lawn chairs, and picnic baskets then sit back, relax and enjoy the live concerts. Featured acts include:

Paws in the Park scheduled for April 2-3

resize-paws-in-the-parkCity of Pearland Parks & Recreation is gearing up for the  22nd annual  Paws in the Park. We will  kick things off on Saturday  morning with the  H-E-B  Pet & Owner Fun  Run followed  by the national Dock  Diving  competition.

Time: 10 a.m. –  4 p.m.

About the Event:

Come prepared to enjoy this weekend full of activities and entertainment with your furry friend.

H-E-B Pet & Owner Fun Run

Each year this event begins with a Fun Run and this year’s races are 1K, 3K, and 5K. Compete with or without your four-legged friends! We will kick off the event with the HEB Pet & Owner Fun Run on Saturday April 2. Register online beginning Dec. 1st at Active.com. (Note: Clicking button will deliver you to our third-party registration site.) Applications are also available in the Pearland Parks & Recreation Office, located at 4141 Bailey Rd., Pearland, Texas 77584 during normal business hours.

Vendors:

About The Event:

Come for a fun filled day of playing in the snow, rides, great food and more!
Tickets: Tickets will be on sale at the Recreation Center and Natatorium beginning Dec. 1 through Jan. 29. Bring a canned good, benefiting the Pearland Neighborhood Center, to receive a $2 discount on pre-sale tickets (maximum one discount per ticket). There will not be any discounts the day of the event.

Parking:

Parking is located at Turner High School and a free shuttle will run to and from the event throughout the day. Event parking is free.

  • Snow tubing hills and snow play areas in the HEB Plus! Winter Zone
  • Live entertainment on the UCHL- Pearland Entertainment Stage

If you need first aid care, you can go to our First Choice Emergency First Aid Tent. We will also have a Pearland EMS patrolling the event to assist with first aid.

2016 Calendar and Annual Report coming to your mailbox

Look for the 2016 Calendar & Annual Report in your mailbox. The Calendar & Annual Report is being mailed to individuals in the Pearland City limits during the month of December.

City continues its effort to improve mobility in the City

As part of the City’s ongoing effort to improve mobility in the City of Pearland and to ease traffic congestion, the Traffic Operations Division adjusted the traffic light lengths along FM 518, from Kirby to Sunrise in order to better handle the holiday traffic.

Additional adjustments have also been made to the signals on Cullen Parkway, from FM 518 to Brookside in order to better handle the morning and school traffic. These changes are part of a mobility effort that began earlier this year with the City’s “Don’t Block the Box” campaign.

Recycling Center Operations transition to KPB

Keep Pearland Beautiful (KPB) will soon assume operations of the Stella Roberts Recycling Center. The change, slated to begin Jan. 1, 2016 is occurring through a joint agreement with the City of Pearland and KPB.

Over the years, Keep Pearland Beautiful has played a vital role in educating and increasing participation in the city’s recycling program and now will play an even more critical role in ensuring Pearland residents recycle. Click here for more information.

Pearland City Council approves new Parks Master Plan

Pearland has new written guidelines for planning proposed park & recreation changes during the next 5 years after City Council approved an updated Parks Master Plan.

The Parks and Recreation Department completed the new long-range planning document after an 11-month comprehensive process aimed at shaping the direction, development and delivery of parks and recreation services in the City. Click here to learn more.

Attend the Toys for Tots basketball game and toy drive

Support a great cause and watch some basketball at the Annual Pearland Toys for Tots “Guns and Hoses” basketball game and toy drive on Saturday, Dec. 12 at 2 p.m. at the Pearland Recreation Center, 4141 Bailey Road.

The charity basketball game will feature the Pearland Police Department taking on the Pearland Fire Department. Please bring one new, unwrapped toy to gain admission. Click here for more information.

Tree lighting ceremony marks the start of the holiday season

Pearland Hometown Christmas begins with the City’s official Tree Lighting Ceremony on Friday, Dec. 4 at 7 p.m. at the Pearland Town Center located at 11200 Broadway.

The event includes UHCL – Pearland horse and carriage rides, live music from Danny Ray and the Acoustic Production on the Westside Veterinary Hospital Entertainment Stage, the H-E-B Winter Wonderland for children, and a visit from the jolly old elf himself…Santa. Visit pearlandparks.com for information. 

Have a “Candy-Coated” Christmas
Themed “Candy-Coated Christmas,” the City of Pearland Lighted Parade is a holiday tradition that gets bigger, brighter and better each year. Get your family together, find a comfortable spot along the route and enjoy one of Pearland’s best shows.
The parade is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 5 at 6 p.m. and begins at Old Alvin Road and traveling east to Pearland Parkway.
Parks & Recreation board seeks new member
The Parks, Recreation & Beautification Board is currently seeking a new board member. Applicants must be a resident of Pearland and possess a passion for helping the community. Board meetings are held on the second Thursday of every month at 8:15 a.m. The one-year term ends on Nov. 1, 2016 and the position remains open until filled. Apply at pearlandtx.gov/parksboard.
Winter/Spring program registration begins Dec. 14
The Winter/Spring Pearland in Motion is now available online and at a facility near you. The resource is your complete guide to City of Pearland programs, services and recreational activities. Winter and Spring registration begins Monday, Dec. 14 at 7:30 a.m. Register at pearlandparks.com.

Pearland honored by Scenic Texas

PRESS RELEASE

Screen Shot 2015-10-14 at 3.45.03 PMTwenty Texas municipalities were honored by the Scenic City Certification Program of Scenic Texas Thursday, September 24, 2015 at The Grand Hyatt in San Antonio, in conjunction with the Texas Municipal League’s Annual Conference. In July, these cities were notified of their certification status within in the Scenic City Program. City officials and business leaders were in attendance at the event, with remarks by Scenic Texas Executive Vice President Anne Culver.

The Scenic City Certification Program is the first of its kind in the United States to incorporate a comprehensive set of model standards for design and development of public roadways and public spaces into a cohesive assessment program. Cities apply to the program for a rigorous evaluation and scoring of existing municipal standards against the model. Those with the highest evaluation scores earn certification. Cities that qualify earn a five-year certification.

The Scenic City Advisory Council includes representatives from Texas Municipal League, Urban Land Institute – Austin, Urban Land Institute – Houston, American Planning Association-Texas Chapter, Houston-Galveston Area Council, American Council of Engineering Companies Houston, Keep Texas Beautiful, North Central Texas Council of Governments, Texas Downtown Association, Texas Economic Development Council, Texas Historical Commission, Scenic Houston and Scenic America.

Scenic Texas is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and enhancing the visual character of Texas. We promote enhanced design standards for public projects, sign regulation, freeway landscaping and scenic byway development. Visit www.scenictexas.org.

Pearland Outdoor Recreation

If you’re nuts about nature like we are and interested in discovering new ways to play with opportunities to improve your skill level and explore outdoor pursuits that are available just beyond your front door, join us during one of our interpretive activities at a City of Pearland facility near you.

Pearland Parks & Rec Youth Development

Youth Development offers a variety of programs for youth and teens. Classes for adults include education, health and fitness and special interest. Staple programs such as summer camps and Adventure Days are also offered by the division.

Adventure Days

When school’s out, look to us for your child’s day camp needs. Adventure Days are camps offered during school breaks, including Thanksgiving week and Spring Break. Participants must be between the ages 6-12. Camps are comprised of activities such as crafts, games, contests, swimming at the natatorium, exercise, academic enrichment and a variety of indoor and outdoor sports. Regular camp hours are 8 a.m.-5 p.m. with extended care offered from 7 a.m.-6 p.m. for an additional fee. Children may be registered daily or weekly for a discounted rate.

Summer Camps

Let your kids experience the active, carefree, safe and supportive summer experience every child desires. Pearland Parks & Recreation offers two summer camps for youth: Camp K.I.A. (Kids In Action) for ages 6-10 years and Camp Mahalo for ages 11-14. Both camps are supervised by degreed professionals and feature a low staff to camper ratio. Each camper should bring a sack lunch and water bottle each day to camp. A morning and afternoon snack will be provided. Each camp session will include at least one field trip typically held on Thursdays.

Camp K.I.A

Camp K.I.A offers a safe and supportive environment where campers feel comfortable trying new activities and building new skills. Daily schedules include a full range of activities such as archery, cooking, nature exploration and crafts.
