Council, PEDC announce Costco’s Pearland location
City Council approved an Economic Development Agreement between Costco Wholesale Corp. and the City, as well as a Performance Agreement between the Pearland Economic Development Corporation (PEDC) and Costco at the regular meeting Monday (April 13).
The City has been in talks with Costco since 2013. The company requested assistance from the City and the PEDC due to the smaller size of the trade area, lower business density count and associated cost of construction that will all reduce the return on its investment.
The agreements that were reached include refunding 50% of the 1.0% of sales tax collected at the business location for up to 10 years and in an amount not more than $750,000.
The PEDC’s proposal was to reimburse Costco for the public infrastructure associated with the improvements that were necessary to build the store on the site located on Business Center Dr., at the northwest corner of SH 288 and CR 59.
Costco will be paid $246,827 when they invest $30 million, receive a Certificate of Occupancy and create 153 jobs at the store.
The Pearland location will consist of a 150,000 sq. ft. retail warehouse with an attached tire center and a freestanding fuel facility. It is anticipated that approximately 75 full-time and 75 part-time jobs will be created.
Costco Wholesale Corporation is a membership warehouse club that provides a wide selection of merchandise. As of 2014, it is the second largest retailer in the United States, the third largest in the world and the largest membership warehouse club chain in the country.
Developers estimate that the store will open for business in October.

Taste of the Town Brings Pearland Together
The Pearland Chamber of Commerce held their annual Business Showcase and Taste of the Town on Thursday (April 2) from 2 – 7 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall, located at 2320 Hatfield Rd. The theme was “Pearland Businesses in the Center Ring.”
“The largest purpose of the Business Showcase and Taste of the Town is to premiere our local businesses that have services and products that sometimes our residents of Pearland don’t know we even have. It’s a one-stop shop, 5-hour event that exposes at least 1,000 people to the businesses that participate,” said Carol Artz-Bucek, President and CEO of the Chamber.
Even though all of the 70+ businesses in this year’s Showcase were Chamber members, membership is not required to participate. However, non-members pay a different price.
There were plenty of giveaways, information, food, drink and fun for all, including games, line dancing and plenty of carnival-like entertainment.
Judges Fay Picard, who is the District Office Manager for State Rep. Dr. Greg Bonnen; Barry Halpern who is the Human Resources Manager for Merit Medical; Daniel Combs, with Alvin ISD Communications; and Darcy Brian-Wilson gave awards for “Best Booth.” The winner was Memorial Hermann Southeast Hospital, with A&A Cleaning coming in second and the Vic Coppinger YMCA placing third. H-E-B won the award for “Tastiest Booth.”
“We are really excited about being a part of the fun, interactive and entertaining happenings at this year’s Pearland Chamber’s Business Showcase and Taste of the Town,” said Donna Coneley, Director of Business Development for Memorial Hermann Southeast Hospital. “Pearland is such a growing, thriving community, and this unique event definitely showcases our dynamic, flourishing business community.”
The Business Showcase continued as the Taste of the Town began at 5:00 p.m. Empty booths filled up with local area restaurants such as Casa Ole, Floyd’s Cajun Seafood and Texas Steakhouse, HEB Plus!/HEB Market, Malibu Steak N Seafood, Mex-Sea-Co Bar and Grill, Pollo Tropical and Stadia Sports Grill, giving out samples from their menus.
When asked about the advantages of being a Chamber member, Artz-Bucek explained, “The opportunities that [the Chamber] organizes and creates for members to be a part of gives them the opportunity to market themselves one-on-one to develop relationships and trust. People do business with people they know, trust and like. You can hand someone your business card today, but that doesn’t mean they’ll call you tomorrow. You just have to continually be in front of someone to build trust and start a relationship.”

Pearland Welcomes Methodist Primary Care Group

Reggie Jacob with Jacob Realty, Owner/Developer Lonnie Gainner, Senior Vice President/Chief Operating Officer Houston Methodist Specialty Physicians Group Stephen Spielman, Mayor Tom Reid, Dr. Mahendra Jain, Pearland Chamber VP Jim Johnson and Chair of the Houston Methodist Department of Radiology Dr. Reginald Munden.
The Pearland Chamber of Commerce and Mayor Tom Reid joined Methodist Primary Care Group for a groundbreaking ceremony on Tuesday (March 3) at the site of the future Pearland Medical Commons, located at 8400 Broadway.
The 46,000 sq. ft. facility is expected to open in early 2016 and will be home to 10 board certified primary care physicians and 30 exam rooms.
“It’s important for our primary care physicians to have an increased presence in the expanding Pearland community,” said Regional Administrator Debby Chambers. “This will also give sicker patients easier access to Houston Methodist Hospital in the Texas Medical Center, along with Houston Methodist St. John Hospital in Clear Lake.”
The facility will also offer the Houston Methodist DeBakey Heart and Vascular Center services, orthopedics and sports medicine on a regular basis, with other specialists occupying the space on a rotating basis.
Imaging equipment, a diagnostics lab, bone density testing and the Houston Methodist Research Institute will also office in the Commons.
Currently, the primary care physicians that are scheduled to join the Houston Methodist Primary Care Group are Drs. Mahendra Jain, Linda Porter-Tucci, Maria Palasi, Martha Gerteisen, Branka Kosarac, Rupali Kadakia, Kenneth Stanley and Kimberly Sims.

Shriners Fred Lemieux (L) and Carl Ellis (R) with IHOP Area Manager Todd Chraden, who holds a proclamation from Mayor Reid.

IHOP also collected donations for charities such as Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, and locally, Shriners Hospitals for Children.
Representatives from Shriners were at both Pearland IHOP locations from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. to answer questions and accept donations. IHOP is located at 3110 Silverlake Village Dr. in west Pearland and at 2829 Broadway St. on the east side.
