Pearland Entrepreneur Opens Fashion-Recycling Store for Teens and Young Adults

54aeca5128919.imageLocal teens and young adults now have a place that not only puts cash back into their pockets, but also sells gently used brand-name clothing and accessories for less.

With a focus on being fashion savvy and shopping smart, the new Plato’s Closet® in Pearland is holding its Grand Opening on Jan. 15 at 9515 Broadway St., Suite 121 behind Shipley’s Donuts.

Plato’s Closet is part of a national recycling retail chain that specializes in clothing and accessories for teens and twenty-somethings. The hip, trendy clothing store buys and sells guys’ and girls’ gently-used, brand-name clothing and accessories, including: shoes, belts, purses, and jewelry and more.

According to Plato’s Closet owner Van Tu, young people love to shop at Plato’s Closet because, “Plato’s Closet fills a distinct niche in the retail market. We are a part of a unique retail resale business that specializes in the teen and young adult market segment.

“The great thing about the concept is that consumers are always looking for ways to stretch their dollar and Plato’s Closet lets them save money in two ways. Customers can achieve savings up to 70 percent off trendy, brand name clothing and accessories. Plus, they can receive cash on the spot for gently-used items that are outgrown or no longer wanted,” Tu said.

Unlike a typical consignment store, no appointment is necessary to sell clothing and accessories to Plato’s Closet. Plus, the store pays cash on the spot for goods it purchases from consumers.

Typically, Plato’s Closet buys items that have been in retail stores within the past 12-to-18 months and are current styles seen in the mall.

“We don’t try to create new fashion trends. We respond to actual trends in a timely and value-oriented manner,” Tu said.

The store is currently open, but will hold its official Grand Opening on Jan. 15 at 10:00 a.m. For more information or store hours, call 281-485-4747 or visit PlatosClosetPearland.com.

The Center at Pearland Parkway Signs Up More Retailers

Stream Realty Partners is filling out the roster of retailers in The Center at Pearland Parkway power center going up in east Pearland.

Palais Royal, Petco, Five Below and Rack Room Shoes will join previously announced tenants TJ Maxx and Ross Dress for Less. The deals brings the 165,000-square-foot center at FM 518 and Pearland Parkway to more than 60 percent preleased.

“Since east Pearland and west Friendswood have traditionally been underserved with retail, demand in this area has been strong, and we have been able to capture the attention of such high quality tenants,” Mark Sondock, managing director-retail division at Stream Realty, said in an announcement of the new tenants.

Stream Realty’s Ralph Tullier and Sondock are leading the project, which is on 27 acres next to a new H-E-B grocery store. The company broke ground last month and expects to complete the center this fall.

A second phase could follow.

Centennial Park Selected for Macy’s “Heart Your Park”

PEARLAND, TEXAS – March 12, 2014 – Pearland’s Centennial Park has been selected for “Heart Your Park,” a program introduced as part of Macy’s “Secret Garden” campaign that aims to raise awareness and dollars for local parks across the country. From March 7 to March 31, customers at the Macy’s located in the Pearland Town Center can donate $1 or more at the register. One hundred percent of the donations will benefit Pearland Parks & Recreation. To further spread the love, Macy’s will match the total customer donation across all stores, dollar for dollar for up to $250,000 in total.

Centennial Park, located at 3219 McLean Road, is one of more than 550 parks nationwide that will benefit from Macy’s “Heart Your Park” this spring. In partnership with the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA), the national non-profit organization dedicated to the advancement of community parks, recreation and conservation, Macy’s stores across the country have each selected a local park or green space in their community to support through the program. Donations will go toward making improvements such as maintaining trails, playgrounds, and ball fields, and everything in between.

“We are thrilled to partner with Macy’s and NRPA for ‘Heart Your Park’,” said Michelle Smith, Parks & Recreation Director. “Through this program and donations by Macy’s customers, we are excited about the increased awareness and additional funding for Centennial Park. Our parks are a great asset to the community, and we greatly appreciate Macy’s support,” she continued.

“Heart Your Park” is part of Macy’s “Secret Garden” spring campaign that will come to life in Macy’s stores and online at macys.com with an infusion of garden-inspired merchandise, special promotions and events. For more information on “Secret Garden,” visit macys.com/secretgarden. For a full list of the parks benefiting from Macy’s “Heart Your Park,” visit macys.com/parks

5 Things You Must Order at Killen’s BBQ

From Zagat (Amber Ambrose):

Even with yesterday’s rain and 37-degree temps, at 10:30 AM, a short line of people had already bundled up outside the closed front doors of just-opened Killen’s Barbecue. By 11 AM, the line snaked around the side of the building, and it didn’t stop for hours. Open less than a month, Killen’s is already poised to become a smoked meats mecca. We had a chance to experience the magic for ourselves; here are five things you absolutely must order.

  1. Bone-In Pork Belly: Affectionately referred to as ‘bacon ribs,’ this unusual cut of meat has all the charm of pork belly, but with the added flavor of being slow-smoked on the bone. This is usually quick to run out, so arrive early if you plan to order it.
  2. Beef Ribs: Caveman-esque, these massive, meaty ribs are melt-in-your-mouth good. It’s hard to imagine anything more beef-y than brisket, but these have surpassed our love of the latter.
  3. Sausage: The sausages are ground and mixed in-house and are just smoky enough. The casing has that perfect snap and the texture of the sausage itself is nice and coarse.
  4. Mac ‘N’ Cheese: As far as sides go, Killen’s has several that are recommendable, though our favorite was the mac ‘n’ cheese. It’s just enough starch and cheese to give you a quick break from all that meat.
  5. Pecan Pie: It’s not a Texas barbecue joint without a pecan pie slice for dessert. This one is homemade with a ‘secret’ ingredient of Mrs. Butterworth’s syrup. (Don’t knock it until you try it.)
