Pearland Islamic Center to host Annual Spring Carnival honoring local heroes

570296e34d428.imageEvery year, the Pearland Islamic Center hosts a Spring Carnival with a different theme each year. Last year’s theme was the Inter-Faith Peace Garden. It was a successful event attended by Christian Church leaders, Hindu temple representatives, Inter-Faith Ministries of Houston, Jewish Rabbis and city dignitaries, including Pearland Mayor Tom Reid.

This year the theme is, “Honoring our local Heroes,” including Pearland Police Department and Pearland Fire Department. St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church is co-sponsoring the event.

“Our ‘Honor our Heroes’ event will bring various faith traditions and city officials together to demonstrate our appreciation and support for the brave police officers and fire fighters in our community,” said Abul Azad, Director of the Pearland Islamic Center. “Moreover, it will be a wonderful opportunity to draw the public’s attention to the danger our first responders face every day while wearing the uniform.”

Bazaars, food, games, rides, bounce houses, mountain climbing, train rides, a petting zoo, Henna tattoos, face painting and balloon artists are just some of the attractions.

The entry fee wristband is $15 for unlimited fun.

The Carnival will be held on Saturday April 9 at the Pearland Islamic Center, located at 1530 Garden Rd.

Indian Cultural and Devotional Celebration this Holiday Season

Global Organization for Divinity will conduct its annual grand celebration of devotion, the Indian way, from December 20 to 27 this year through a 7-day “Madhurotsavam” (Sanskrit for “sweet celebration”) at Namadwaar Prayer House located at 3642 Bailey Ave, Manvel TX 77578 and at the Huong Lam Buddhist Temple at 4203 CR 89, Pearland TX 77584.

India’s culture is intertwined completely with its spirituality, and both of these aspects will be evident during this annual celebration that will focus on celebrating God through song, dance and listening to His stories from Indian scriptures.

Daily day-time events will be held at Namadwaar. These will include kirtan (singing the Lord’s praises), chanting His names, reading of the original Sanskrit text of Srimad Bhagavatam (an ancient Indian devotional scripture), processions with songs, spiritual discourses and classical performances.

From Dec 21-27, the evening program will begin at 6 pm at the Huong Lam Buddhist Temple, and will include cultural music and dance performances by various local artistes and the highlight spiritual discourse (in English, on Srimad Bhagavatam) by Mr. M.K. Ramanujam, disciple of His Holiness Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji from India.

Mr. Ramanujam, who has visited the Houston area several times before, is an excellent speaker who has absorbed the intricate essence of Indian scriptures directly from his Master. His insightful discourses throw beautiful, meaningful, practical light on the subtle aspects of Hinduism and ancient Indian wisdom. His discourses on devotion, especially, are brilliant and instill in the listeners love for the Lord and love for the path of devotion itself.

Local Teen Needs Donations for Moore, OK Service Project

From neighbor Jordon W.:

Dear Fellow Silvercreek Neighbors:

I attend Berry Miller Junior High where I am an 8th grader and member of the National Junior Honor Society. One of the things we do is community service, and so I am writing to ask for your help on something.

My church is doing a project this week called SHOWING MOORE LOVE to help victims of the tornado in Moore, OK. This week we are collecting toiletries, cleaning items and new underwear for adults and children. Members of our church will drive the collected donations to Moore, OK next week.

Would you please consider donating a few toiletries, cleaning supplies or new underwear. My mom can bring me to pick them up from you this week, through Thursday, May 30, 2013, so that we can deliver them to the church Friday, May 31st. Our telephone number is 281-692-9508 or you can e-mail my mother (swilliams3@uh.edu).

THANK YOU for considering helping me “Show Moore Love.”
