Pearland resident Dr. Peta-Gay Chen Ledbetter was recently selected from a pool of applicants to be Mrs. Pearland International 2015.
This contest is no typical pageant, however. Dr. Ledbetter was invited to apply for the title by the current Mrs. Texas International, Whitney Montgomery. Applicants are reviewed based on their morals, values, education and other humanitarian traits.
Dr. Ledbetter will compete in the Mrs. Texas International pageant in March in Garland, Tex. Should she take the crown, she would go on to compete for the Mrs. International title.
According to the website, the “Mrs. Texas International is open to married women age 21 to 56 as of July 1st of the competition year. We uplift women who want to excel in their lives and make a difference in their communities. We celebrate your energy, commitment to marriage and family, and your desire to challenge yourself.
Contestants compete in 3 areas of competition:
Interviews (50% of score) will be conducted between 5 judges and contestant. Each contestant will have 5 minutes with each judge. No political or religious questions allowed. Each contestant will need to have a platform for which she will speak on during her year, if selected Mrs. Texas International. Dress for interview is business attire.
Each contestant will wear her own personal choice of evening gown (25% of score). Each contestant will be judged on grace, poise and elegance in evening wear. Husbands escort their wives in this segment of competition.
Each contestant will wear the state selected fitness wear (25% of score), designed specifically for the International pageant system. Each contestant will be judged on being physically fit, energetic, and healthy.”
Ledbetter’s chosen platform is women’s empowerment through helping and educating survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. The beneficiary she has chosen is the Houston Area Women’s Center (HAWC).
Ledbetter is seeking sponsors, which would get ads in the Mrs. Texas International program handed out to attendees and circulated among Texas communities. All proceeds gathered from sponsorships and fundraisers go to HAWC.
Ledbetter is also making herself available for appearances at local Pearland events. Each appearance will earn her (and Pearland) “community investment points,” which will help her chances to take the crown at the Mrs. Texas competition.
Sponsorships are available in many price ranges and levels. A “Good Luck” line is a personal encouragement from an individual or business that will be printed in the program. This costs $25 per line (up to 50 characters).
Larger sponsorships range from $70 for a business card sized ad to $500 for a full-page ad.
Ledbetter’s first fundraiser will be held on Friday Jan. 16 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Chloe Dao Boutique located at 6127 Kirby in Houston’s Rice Village.
