The three students lost their lives in a tragic car accident earlier in the school year. “We truly appreciate the thoughtfulness of the students and staff at Dawson High School, and all of the support that our students continue to receive from the community,” said Charlotte Liptack, principal of Manvel High School. “This stone will allow for these three students to never be forgotten by everyone who walks through the doors of Manvel High School.”

The campus is currently in the process of developing a memorial garden in honor of every Manvel High School student who has lost his or her life. The garden will be funded using donations that have recently been given to the campus in honor the three students, and will include the stone donated by Dawson High School.

Manvel High School students held a vigil to honor three teens who were recently killed in a tragic car crash. On Friday (Jan. 9), friends and family members gathered at the football stadium to sing songs and read poems in memory of seniors Sara Silvas, Zori Petrova and Joshua Rodriguez.

At the close of the ceremony, hundreds of balloons were released into the sky. The cold and gloomy weather seemed to mirror the somber mood of the crowd, who watched in silence as the balloons floated upward and dissapeared into the dark clouds.

Texas Department of Safety officials report the accident occured Wednesday, Jan. 7, as Rodriguez was driving down Old Chocolate Bayou. The young driver reportedly lost control of the Honda sedan, which slammed backwards into a five-foot-deep culvert and burst into flames.

In the days that followed, students and family members returned to the scene of the tragic accident, which is now covered with flowers and tokens left by those still mourning the loss of three lives so full of promise.

“These three have left an incredible mark on Manvel High School. They were leaders. They were athletes. They were friends,” Daniel Combs, Alvin ISD spokesman said at the remembrance ceremony. “They will be dearly missed.”

Joshua “Josh” Rodriguez was a resident of Pearland who played football and soccer. Before high school, he attended Don Jeter Elementary and Nolan Ryan Jr. High School, both in Alvin ISD.

“Josh was an active student who was always happy and loved life. He was enthusiastic, vibrant and athletic. He was making plans to attend the University of Houston with a major in engineering,” Manvel High School principal Charlotte Liptack said in a release.

Rodriguez had a tenth grade sibling at Manvel High School and a fifth grade sibling at Mary Marek Elementary, as well as a sibling that was a 2013 graduate of Manvel High School.

Zornitsa “Zori” Petrova was also a resident of Pearland. She was elected Senior Class President and was a member of the tennis and swim teams. Before high school, she attended Mary Marek Elementary School and Nolan Ryan Junior High.

“She had an outgoing, contagious personality,” Liptack said. “She was a brilliant student and an integral member of the debate and academic decathlon teams. She had been accepted, and was planning to attend Texas A&M University.”

Sara Silvas swas from Clute and played varsity softball. She had attended Manvel High School for two years and attended Brazoswood High School previously. Her future plan was to attend the University of Texas at San Antonio.

“Sara always had a bright smile and was a vibrant part of the Manvel High School community. She was kind, hardworking, and always helpful,” Liptack said. “Sara is the daughter of Manvel High School Dual Credit Advisor, Monica Silva. Mrs. Silvas is an instrumental part of the Maverick Family.”

Silva had older siblings who attend schools outside Alvin ISD.

Principal Liptack expressed her sympathy in a letter to Manvel High School parents and students.

“The Manvel High School community is a family that shows incredible support for one another during trying times. The three families need to know that we care, but they also need privacy today and throughout the week. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers, and please be there for each other,” Liptack wrote. “I know that we will get through this difficult time together.”

A fiery car crash near Manvel took the lives of three Pearland-area teenagers Wednesday (Jan. 7).

Around 2 p.m., the three Manvel High School students were killed after their vehicle skidded off the road and caught fire on County Rd. 89 near County Rd. 100 just outside Pearland.

On Thursday (Jan. 8), Alvin Independent School District (AISD) officials released the names of the three victims.

The driver of the vehicle was identified as Pearland-resident Joshua “Josh” Rodriguez, who played football and soccer for Manvel High School.

According to a release from Charlotte Liptack, Manvel High School Principal, he attended Don Jeter Elementary and Nolan Ryan Jr. High School, both in Alvin ISD.

“Josh was an active student who was always happy and loved life. He was enthusiastic, vibrant and athletic. He was making plans to attend the University of Houston with a major in engineering,” Liptack said.

Rodriguez had a tenth grade sibling at Manvel High School and a fifth grade sibling at Mary Marek Elementary, as well as a sibling that was a 2013 graduate of Manvel High School.

The two passengers were identified as Pearland-resident Zornitsa “Zori” Petrova and Sara Silva of Clute.

Petrova was the senior class president who was a member of the tennis and swim teams. Previously, she attended Mary Marek Elementary School and Nolan Ryan Junior High.

“She had an outgoing, contagious personality,” Liptack said. “She was a brilliant student and an integral member of the debate and academic decathlon teams. She had been accepted, and was planning to attend Texas A&M University.”

Silva played varsity softball and was in her second year as a Manvel High School student. Prior to that, she attended Brazoswood High School She planned to attend the University of Texas at San Antonio.

“Sara always had a bright smile and was a vibrant part of the Manvel High School community. She was kind, hardworking, and always helpful,” Liptack said. “Sara is the daughter of Manvel High School Dual Credit Advisor, Monica Silvas. Mrs. Silvas is an instrumental part of the Maverick Family.”

Silva was a resident of Clute and had older siblings who attend schools outside Alvin ISD.

From Baseball Pitcher to Island Missionary

5478d788bd477.imageEric Tonini, age 18, graduated in 2014 from Manvel High School where he did a little of everything, football, varsity band and varsity debate, but his main passion is baseball. He was a pitcher for the Manvel varsity baseball team, and he even drew attention from some major league baseball scouts. He said, “I had a couple schools looking at me my senior year, but to me what was more important was going on a mission.”

Tonini has been called to serve in the Marshall Islands Majuro Mission for two years for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This means temporarily putting aside his passion for baseball. He explained, “I’ll have the opportunity to stay in shape, but I highly doubt I’ll throw a baseball for the next two years.” Although he does hope to play baseball again when he returns, he said that it’s not his priority. “In the grand scheme of things, it’s fun to play baseball. It’s a good thing to do, but serving the Lord for two years is a better thing to do.”

Born in Houston, Tonini grew up in Pearland, where he started playing on YMCA baseball teams. He learned many lessons from baseball which he plans to apply to his missionary service. He said, “As pitcher, you’re in charge of the whole game. Because of that it caused me to become a leader and work with other people. As a missionary, you have to be a leader and work with other people.”

When Eric returns from his mission, he plans to attend college to earn an engineering degree and an MBA, and he probably will try out for his school’s baseball team but for now his goals are on his missionary work. “My goal for my mission is that first I want to really learn the language, and second I want to make everyone’s day on the (Marshall) Islands,” said Tonini.
