Lions Club Makes Mass Donation to Operation Backpack

The Lions Club of Pearland was proud to donate 62 backpacks, some filled with school supplies, to the Vic Coppinger YMCA‘s “Operation Backpack,” on July 1. “Every backpack was purchased by a Lion out of his own pocket, not out of the Lions Club funds,” says Secretary Hugh Patton.

Given that there are around 120 Lions, almost half of the members took action to gather these backpacks and supplies in one day. The items were loaded up in a truck and presented to Ruby Sanders at the YMCA by her husband and Lion, George Sanders. The backpacks and supplies will be given to underprivileged students in local area school districts.

About Operation Backpack: YMCAs across the Greater Houston area are gearing up to provide school supplies for children in our communities. The children you help through this project will be filled with hope, joy and excitement as they start the school year. Your investment will provide these children the opportunity to start school with the tools to be successful.

Many willing hearts are needed to assist with this project. Help the YMCA make a difference in the life of a child. Donate a backpack filled with school supplies and change a life!

For more information about participating in Operation Backpack, click HERE.

Backpacks and supplies may be dropped off at the following locations:

Donations will be accepted all summer! Please consider helping a local child in need, or in the Lions’ case, 62!

Jury Duty Scam – Be Aware!

From the Brazoria County’s website (

Brazoria County District Clerk Rhonda Barchak has indicated scammers are calling jurors and introducing themselves as Constable Buck Stevens and/or other law enforcement officers and trying to charge $1000 for fake fines with a number to call back of 281-622-1964.

Mrs. Barchak advices that anyone who has missed jury duty will never be notified by phone. They will receive a letter from the District Clerk’s Office on official letterhead with a failure to appear notice signed. If you receive a call about missing jury duty, please call the Brazoria County District Clerk’s Office phone number at 979-864-1836 and the Brazoria County District Attorney’s Office at 979-864-1230.

ImmTrac Keeps Vaccination Records for You

ImmTracImmTrac remembers which vaccines you’ve had, when you can’t. This no-cost service provided by the State of Texas safely stores immunization records in one electronic system. Now, both adults and children can register with ImmTrac to store their immunizations for a lifetime. Stay on track — register today.

In 2009, ImmTrac became a lifetime registry, allowing Texas adults to register in ImmTrac. Previously, ImmTrac was an electronic registry for children only.

A message from Constable Buck Stevens:

The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has scheduled another National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day which will take place on Saturday, April 27, 2013, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. This is a great opportunity for those who missed the previous events, or who have subsequently accumulated unwanted, unused prescription drugs, to safely dispose of those medications.

In the five previous Take-Back events, the DEA in conjunction with our state, local, and tribal law enforcement partners have collected more than 2 million pounds (1,018 tons) of prescription medications were removed from circulation.

The National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day aims to provide a safe, convenient, and responsible means of disposal, while also educating the general public about the potential for abuse of these medications.

[Editor’s note: Thank you, Constable Stevens, for all of your hard work with this endeavor and with making the skate park a soon-to-be reality!]

Update on Home Security Survey

We just received new information about the Home Security Survey.

Silvercreek residents live outside the city limits, so it is unknown if the Pearland Police Dept. will come out and do the survey here. An alternative is the Precinct 3 Constable Office. You need to call about 2 weeks in advance to schedule a survey. The phone number is 281-997-9777 and the phone is answered Monday – Friday from 8:00am – 5:00pm. Tell the person who answers the phone that you are inquiring about a home inspection. Thank you to Constable Buck Stevens for this information!
