Perot Summer Discovery Camp June 3 – August 16

Camps combine hands-on exploration and activity with stimulating scientific concepts to keep young minds sharp over summer vacation. Campers will incorporate skills using science, technology, engineering, and math. We will have camps at both the Museum and The Hockaday School, with before and after care available for campers in kindergarten and up.

This camp will be loaded with tons of hands-on messy experiments! You will make bouncy balls, play with slime, and make some exciting discoveries of ooey, gooey, slimy, and icky science fun!

K-4TH GRADE:

Gross Science

Why are feet smelly? What is the purpose of mucus? In this camp, you’ll have a fun-filled week of learning about our gross bodily functions. Find out all there is to know about burping, boogers, excrement, gas, saliva, and germs and how our brain, cells, heart, organs and blood contribute to the grossness.

What’s the best way to be certain that you’re getting everything you can out of your summer vacation?  The answer is – get out!  July is National Park and Recreation Month and we’re giving you an entire month of activities, programs and events to help you show how “Out is In!” this summer! Pearland’s Celebration of Freedom – July 4 at “The Rig”

Join us in celebrating our country’s birthday at the City of Pearland’s annual “Celebration of Freedom!” The event will be held on Friday, July 4 at Pearland High School football stadium (“The Rig”). Field seating will be available at no charge beginning at 6 p.m. A VFW military salute will begin the evening’s entertainment, followed by a performance of the national anthem by our Let Freedom Sing talent search winner. Then sit back, relax and sing along to the sounds of the Drywater Band until sundown, performing live from the H-E-B Entertainment Stage!

At 9 p.m., enjoy a spectacular fireworks show, “unleashed” by Westside Veterinary Hospital, to conclude the night. Food is available for purchase or you can bring your own. Please note that alcohol, glass containers, pets and tobacco are prohibited. Activities will also be on-site including face painting, a Kid Zone, sponsored by Memorial Hermann Convenient Care Center and strolling entertainment. Summertime is a better time at the RCN!

Summer is well under way! TheRecreation Center & Natatorium has felt an increased energy of enthusiasm and fun. We are very excited about all that is going on at the RCN. We are happy to host many youth out of school, summer camps and a variety of new programs and guests. We are especially excited to show off a few new features to the Natatorium. We purchased a Wibit Wiggle Bridge a few months ago and we’re excited to make fun use of it this summer in the competition pool. We will also be introducing a new kid’s slide in a few weeks to the activity pool. Our members can also look forward to new youth and adult kayaking classes later this year with the purchase of 10 new kayaks. Last but not least, the concession stand at the Natatorium is now open, serving light snacks and cool refreshments, so stop on by.

With all the new activities and futures we are eager to welcome and assist you and your guests this summer. We strive to make all of our patrons and users here at the RCN happy and impressed. In an effort to accomplish this goal, please view the open swim schedule . Also note that although learn to swim lesson blocks are scheduled from 10 a.m. to 12 noon & 6 to 8 p.m., we do our best to open a portion of the activity open as soon as possible. Jump Start Your Summer!

The Start Smart Sports Development program teaches basic motor skills needed to participate in various organized sports. Learn to work one-on-one with your child to help them get ready for different sports and activities. Parent participation is required in this program to help promote development and a strong understanding of the activities. Sign up today for classes in July for youth ages 4 to 7 years.

Freestyle Jumpin’ is every bit as high-energy as it sounds! Kids will learn all about jumping rope, which is much more than just jumping! They will be taught technique, form and just plain fun. For a hopping good time, join classes forming this month. Freestyle Jumpin’ is for children ages 4 to 11 years.

“OUT Is IN!” During National Park and Recreation Month!

Join us in celebrating National Park and Recreation all month long in July! Set a trend, change your outlook and get involved through Pearland Parks & Recreation by showing us how “Out Is In!” We’ve even created a special calendar to keep you headed out and in all month long!
Take pictures or videos showing Pearland how you and your family are getting out or in with your local parks and recreation and share them with us on our social media platforms. We will post your photos to our Facebook page and our Twitter feed and we’ll award winners, based on the number of Likes that each photo receives. We’ll also print and display your photos in the art gallery area of the Recreation Center for the entire month! You’ll even get special discounts at participating local restaurants when you mention “Out Is In!”  National Park and Recreation Month is a partnership with the National Recreation and Park Association.
Annual Natatorium Maintenance Closure – August 4 to 8

From August 4 through August 8, we will be closing the Natatorium side only for facility upkeep in order to clean and maintain the facility as our customers have come to expect. As with similar past maintenance closures, we will be closing only the Natatorium side of the facility during the week. The Recreation Center will remain open for members and guests.We anticipate re-opening the Natatorium, thoroughly cleaned and ready to serve you, on Saturday, August 9, just in time for the annual Birthday Bash! Master the Art of Jiu-Jitsu

Jiu-jitsu, known as “the gentle art,” incorporates the mental, physical and spiritual aspects of martial arts. Learn to build personal character and confidence with Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, named for the world-famous Brazilian family who developed this style of self-defense. Jiu-jitsu, in addition to providing you with a great cardio workout, will also help you to train to improve your mind, body and soul in a team-building atmosphere. Classes are available for both Youth (ages 6 to 12 years) and Adult (ages 13 and up). The cost of the Adult course is $125/month for residents, $155/month for non-residents. The cost of the Youth course is $105/month for residents, $135/month for non-residents. Fees are due on a monthly basis. Concession Stand Now Open at the Natatorium!

Get your snack on at the Natatorium! Our new concession stand is now open Monday through Saturday, noon until 6 p.m.

Enjoy cool refreshing sodas, tasty candy bars, sour straws, beef jerky, cup of noodles, chimichangas, Uncrustables and much more! Most items cost a dollar or less! Keep your energy up and your tummy full while you swim or work out!

Houston Rockets Summer Basketball Camp

The Houston Rockets and the National Basketball Academy will host a five-day summer basketball clinic at the Recreation Center & Natatorium from July 14 to 18. This camp is designed for boys and girls who are looking to improve their basketball skills. Throughout the camp, participants will receive personal instruction in all areas of the game including dribbling, shooting, passing, blocking and defense. Train with expert coaches from the National Basketball Academy and experience the fun and excitement of being associated with an NBA team! The Recreation Center and Natatorium is turning 4 and we are inviting everyone to the party! Come out to the RCN on Saturday, August 9 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for the 4th Annual RCN Birthday Bash!  On this special admission-freeday, you can stroll down the RCN Boardwalk and see what you’ve been missing in your own backyard! Not only will you realize what the RCN has to offer you and your family to lead a more active and healthy lifestyle, you’ll also enjoy inflatable bouncers, free activities designed for all ages, abilities and interests and an exciting live demonstration from our own Houston Wheelchair Rugby team!

Then, end the day waterlogged by testing your skills leap-frogging on the giant lily pads in the Natatorium. Special one-day-only membership discounts will be offered, so your family can enjoy the RCN all year long.
